Volunteers play a crucial role in many organizations, and we have a large pool of people willing to help you right now. Contact us to find out how our consumers can get involved with your organization or business.
Whether you’re interested in volunteering with us directly or you would like our help in finding a volunteer position within the community, we look forward to hearing from you.
If you have an interest in technology, especially the use of software and hardware to allow those with disabilities to access computers and the Internet, then our Adaptive Technology Internship could be great for you.
Along with our AT Internship and our CAP program, our AT program provides a wide variety of hardware and software options to allow access to both computers and the Internet for many disabilities.
We are always interested in hearing from other peer support groups within the community that offer services our consumers may be interested in. As well, we are more than willing to work with you to ensure that your group is accessible to people with disabilities.
As part of the services and supports we offer, ILRC is available as a meeting space for a number of groups on a regular basis. Along with these meetings, we also host workshops and events when possible.
Directed at providing services, supports, and education to businesses, employers, government, and service providers, this program aims to showcase the value of hiring people with disabilities as a viable labour source. Together, we can help your business become a more inclusive workplace while benefitting in other ways as well.
Building on the successes of our past, our strategic plan provides a structure for the next three years that will allow us to develop services and other needed resources to ensure the province has a great degree of inclusion.
Our membership is open to the general public, and we welcome you to get involved. With over 400 members now, we have an active group who volunteer at the centre and support various ILRC activities. However, we can always use more friendly faces, especially as we continue to expand and diversify our membership across the province.
Simply adapting a few changes to your actions and attitudes towards those with disabilities can lead to great change, which is crucial to not only improving the lives of every person with a disability, but also everyone else.
When interacting with a person with a disability, the best guideline is to behave no differently than you would with someone without a disability. Making assumptions about how you can help them or what they can and cannot do may do more harm than good.
Our organizational structure, as well as our Annual General Meetings, helps to ensure that we remain accountable for the services and supports that we offer. As well, our annual election of our Board of Directors allows us to produce fresh ideas when planning our future goals.

Our Independent Living Internship Program allows those with disabilities to not only access help within their own communities, it also provides an opportunity for them to provide the same services to others.
In order to develop programs and services that benefit the whole community, we invest in research that acknowledges and respects people who have disabilities as experts. Through partnering with other organizations on a number of projects, we are able to develop what we offer based on sound research, which leads to better results for everyone.
The Independent Living Resource Centre (ILRC) is pleased to announce Kimberly Yetman Dawson has been hired as its new Executive Director. While new to the ILRC, she has 25 years experience in the non-profit sector, strong collaboration skills and excellent marketing expertise.
